It is the box office pull of Thalapathy Vijay that is once again putting a new shape on the South Indian theatrical scene. Case in point: H. Vinoth’s Tamil action thriller has put to one side Chiranjeevi’s most recent effort to claim the year’s fourth biggest opening day pre-sale in India.
With KVN Productions set to put its political actioner Jana Nayagan before global audiences, the domestic booking numbers are already pointing to an explosive start. Sacnilk, the trade tracker, has the figures to back it up. The film has raked in more than ₹15.18 crore in gross pre-sales for its first day in India (reserved inventory included), a performance that puts it ahead of the advance booking mark of nearly ₹14 crore set by Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu and makes it the fourth highest in 2026 so far.
High Occupancy Across Core Territories
Tuesday saw an aggressive run on pre-sales in the South Indian circuits. In the hours after tickets were made available, the book had over 429,000 seats from a nationwide grid of 5,751 showtimes.
The numbers tell the story of the demand on opening day:
- Total Gross Advance (with blocked inventory): ₹15.18 crore
- Realized Advance Ticket Sales: ₹10.45 crore
Tamil Nadu is the main source of revenue, with Chennai and Coimbatore seeing early morning shows in their metropolitan centres go quickly. But there is cross-border strength as well; Karnataka has put up some uncharacteristically good early figures, no doubt helped by the multiplex density in Bengaluru and Vijay’s expanding reach beyond the usual Tamil-speaking audience.
2026 Domestic Opening Benchmarks
Jana Nayagan is making its way into a 2026 calendar crowded with expensive, multi-language tentpoles. Its pre-sale pace is in line with the more profitable debuts of the year. Then there is Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar 2 at the top of the table with a commanding ₹53.00 crore in Day 1 advances, Ram Charan’s Peddi at ₹20.66 crore and Prabhas’ The Raja Saab on ₹15.31 crore. With its ₹15.18 crore, Jana Nayagan is a close fourth, having just nipped ahead of the ₹14.00 crore in pre-sales for Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu.
Analysts would have you believe the gap with The Raja Saab will be closed before the film starts rolling, once late single-screen and international premiere numbers come in.
A Global Strategy
For the Bangalore outfit KVN Productions this is a major financial undertaking. Under the direction of H. Vinoth (of Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Valimai), the film is built for pan-Indian consumption. Vijay is joined by an ensemble meant to draw in crowds, not least Bobby Deol in the role of the main villain, as well as Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Prakash Raj.
Add to that a score from Anirudh Ravichander which has been generating plenty of digital noise of late and, as exhibition sources see it, the momentum should build heading into the weekend. If the present trend continues through the remaining advance windows, expect Jana Nayagan to make a case for breaking the ₹20 crore pre-sale wall when it opens.
